Have you ever wondered how to put your music up for sale on major digital platforms? Or how to make your songs available on Spotify, Pandora, Google Play and other streaming services? We have good news – it’s not as complicated as it seems.
Disclaimer: This is not covert advertising. I just want to share my experience as a musician after using the Record Union service in the last few years. I'll tell you how this service can give a boost to your career and help you increase the exposure of your work.
What is Record Union?
Record Union is a digital music distributor. They make your songs available both on the main sales platforms (e.g. iTunes, Beatport, Amazon) and in the most popular streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal among others). And not only that: Record Union also takes care of collecting your earnings, which you receive on a monthly basis.
It is not necessary to be a professional musician to distribute your music, or to be under the protection of a record company. It doesn't matter if music is just your hobby or you do it for a living. Record Union is designed for all profiles, from amateur musicians to world class artist.
How does it work?
Starting to distribute your work will take just a few minutes. You'll have to create a free account, fill in the information of your release and upload your songs in WAV format. And, of course, you'll also need to upload the cover of your single, EP or album. The minimum size required for your digital cover is 1400x1400 pixels. If you get yours from Covercrush, you can be sure that the quality will be more than good enough. Our digital pack includes the cover in a size of 1800x1800 pixels so no detail will be missed.
Okay, but how much does it cost?
This is the best part: Record Union prices are very affordable. Although you have several plans you can choose from, we like being ambitious so we recommend the "World Domination" plan that includes distribution to all available musical services. This is the price table corresponding to that option:
- Single (1-2 songs): $ 15 / year
- EP (3-5 songs): $ 20 / year
- Album (6-12 songs): $ 25 / year
Keep in mind that the subscription is annual and that you are not obliged to renew it. Once your work is on sale in all the platforms, Record Union will send your monthly payments that include your earnings for downloads and royalties generated by the plays of your tracks in the streaming services. The commission from your royalties that Record Union retains is 15% (in my opinion, quite a reasonable percentage), although you can reduce it to only 7.5% by paying extra when you get your subscription.
This is the basic operating mode of Record Union, but it doesn't end here. Your subscription includes services as useful as detailed statistics of plays on Spotify, discounts on mastering services or radio promotion. They even have their own music festival! An initiative called Breakfast Sessions that consists of inviting its users to give concerts in their offices to be discovered by influential people in the music industry.
My own experience
In 2014, I started distributing the releases of my project called Maxthor through Record Union and I suppose that by now you've already realized that I am delighted with this service. Believe me, this is not an expense but an investment. Even if the plays and sales of your songs are scarce, you don't need too much to cover the cost of your subscription. And, of course, who wouldn't want their music to be available in every corner of the internet? The more exposure, the greater opportunities.
To sum up, Record Union is an integral service that you should take advantage of if you want to take your career to the next level. A clear and simple interface, close and personalized customer service. Check it out for yourself!
